Black Betty was established by Hamish Evans who, while working in cafes in Christchurch during the 1990′s, developed a passion for espresso. This interest led him overseas to some of the world’s most notable espresso hot-spots, including Italy’s vibrant cafe culture and the productive landscapes of India’s coffee farms. After his overseas (espresso) experience, Hamish returned to NZ and (in New Brighton) opened SWITCH Espresso a local/boutique coffee company that roasts and blends premium espresso beans. After further travel he became interested in exploring new coffee production methods. This is why Black betty now offers siphon and pour over coffee, these two new techniques are the next step forward into specialty coffee.
SWITCH Espresso has won a GOLD medal at the reputable New Zealand Coffee Roasters Competition. The SWITCH team are proud of this achievement and are proud to serve award winning coffee at Black Betty.
